"There are no seven wonders of the world in the eyes of a child. There are seven million." - unknown
Simple. Authentic. Emotive. Soothing.
I’ve made two of the most important playlists of my life recently. The first was for my wife’s labor and delivery. I thought I was being very clever by including tracks like “I wanna be sedated”, “I’m coming out” and “push it”. While it certainly satisfied my need to riff on a theme, it didn’t quite do it’s job - primarily to soothe and relax. Thankfully, I changed course and played music that did it's job - to relax. The other extremely important playlist I put together was for the newest member of our family, Willow, who just joined us last week. I’ve already dusted off old records - everything from the Wizard of Oz soundtrack to John Coltrane. From Led Zeppelin to Grand Master Flash. I can’t wait to give her a wide-ranging musical tour of this new world. But, I also realized I needed a playlist that was a bit more practical (i.e. to help us both get some sleep :-). If I could find a soundtrack to slumber to, I will have found the elixer of parental life. I've got this playlist on right now. I’m sitting here writing this at 5am as baby Willow continues to doze. I think it’s working pretty damn well. Whether you have a little one at home or not, you’ll find a collection of songs here that soothes without being saccharine. You’ll find a collection of songs that evoke a sense of wonder. Think of these songs as your rose-colored glasses that will help you see all 7 million wonders of the world. Enjoy!
